About Institution of Engineers (India)

The Institution of Engineers (India), the IEI, is a national organization for engineers in India. It is the world’s largest multi-disciplinary engineering professional society. For those who have pursued a formal education in engineering, an associate membership engineering degree certificate can be achieved by qualifying in the examinations conducted by the institution.

The Institution of Engineers (India) [IEI] was established in 1920 with its Headquarters located in Kolkata and incorporated under Royal Charter on 9th September, 1935 by the then His Majesty of King George V. The Institution’s duty to encourage the general advancement of engineering among its members and others affiliated with the Institution was given to it by the Royal Charter. Article 372 of the Indian Constitution protects the institution as a “Body Corporate” following independence. The President serves as the head of the National Council that oversees the Institution of Engineers (India).

 The Institution of Engineers (India) is the first professional body to represent India in several International Bodies, such as the World Mining Congress (WMC), the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO), the Commonwealth Engineers’ Council (CEC), the Federation International du Beton (fib), and the Federation of Engineering Institutions of South and Central Asia (FEISCA). It also has bilateral agreements with a number of professional societies across the globe.

The Institution of Engineers (India) as a pioneer body has been conducting Sections A & B Examinations popularly known as AMIE, successful completion of which is recognized as equivalent to a degree in engineering by the Government of India, the Union Public Service Commission, the State Governments and many Public / Private Sector organizations in the country.

IEI issues membership certification to the eligible engineers, technologists and scientists. Chartered EngineerProfessional Engineer and International Professional Engineer certifications in various disciplines of engineering are also issued by this Institution.

The State / Local Centres of IEI spread across the country do organise technical activities and provide platform to the stakeholders, technocrats, policy makers and others to share their expertise to benefit the engineering fraternity.

Services of IEI

  1. To promote the general advancement of engineering and their application
  2. Grant certificate of competency for practice of Engineering Profession
  3. Arrange and promote for settlement of disputes in Engineering by arbitration and act as or nominate arbitrators
  4. Confer to the Government and other bodies the views regarding matters directly or indirectly affecting the Engineering profession
  5. Promote study of Engineering through R & D activities and grants
  6. Encourage elevate and recognise the technical knowledge and practice of individuals and organizations through scholarships, awards and other benefaction
  7. Pioneer in providing Non-formal Engineering Education (popularly known as AMIE Exam) in India
  8. Dissemination and updating of engineering and technological knowledge among its members, through Technical Activities
  9. Inculcating and promoting amongst engineers and technologists a growing commitment to the social objectives of the profession
  10. Fostering national and international cooperation in engineering and technology
  11. Facilitates Continued Professional Development (CPD)
  12. To promote efficiency and honourable dealings to suppress malpractice in engineering
